Today we’re reviewing the HP Envy 5660 Wireless e-All-in-one Printer, Scanner and Copier.
Over the last few years, printer manufacturers have embraced sleek, modern designs for their printers and slowly moved away from the drab white boxes of the past. The HP Envy 5660 follows this trend with a sleek, clean and modern design that could easily blend into the decor of any house or office. It has an all-black matte exterior with minimal controls and buttons. There’s a power button on the left of the front face and a blue wireless indicator light right under it. All controls on this HP Envy 5660 are through the 2.65” color touchscreen and the soft-keys next to it. The touchscreen is very responsive and easy to use. Its very easy to make selections and scroll through menus. The HP Envy 5660 even has an eco mode that turns the touch-screen off after a few minutes of inactivity, to save power.
Setting up the HP Envy 5660 wireless inkjet printer is a breeze. In fact, it’s probably the easiest setup process I’ve seen on ANY printer so far. On smartphones, setup involves downloading the HP AiO Remote App, which guides you, step by step, to set up the printer. On pcs or macs, setup can be done by typing in 123.hp.com into your web broswer and then following the instructions and prompts. It then asks you to install two very useful apps: HP Scan and HP Utility. HP Utility allows you to set up the printer and even change settings. HP has even developed a Chrome App for Chromebook users to print to their HP Printers. However, the setup using a Smartphone is by far the easiest. The system guides you step by step to connect the HP 5660 to your home Wifi network and then allows all computers, tablets and smartphones on that wifi network to print to the HP 5660. All the setup is done wirelessly and you won’t need a USB cable to set the printer up. Now in case you still feel like connecting the HP Envy 5660 to a single computer using a usb cable, you’ll need to buy a cable, as HP doesn’t provide a usb cable with the HP Envy 5660. Considering how easy the printer is to setup wirelessly, I doubt anyone will be using a usb cable.
The HP Envy 5660’s Copier, Scan and Photo print mode can be controlled directly from the touchscreen. In the copy mode, you can make upto 50 Black or Color copies at a time and it has a whole host of features like ID card copying, 2-sided copying, enhancements and resizing. Features that you would usually find on a full-size photocopier. Very impressive and easy to use.
The HP Envy 5660’s scan mode is equally impressive. You can scan to a computer, an sd card or even email the document. In fact, using the AIO Remote App, you can even scan and save a document directly to your phone. In the scan to computer mode, you can choose to scan as a pdf or jpeg, which makes it very easy to email and share documents. You can also scan to an SD card, using the SD card slot on the left hand side. Extremely well thought out and very simple to use. Big thumbs up to HP for including all these extremely useful features.
The HP Envy 5660’s paper tray holds 125 sheets and is a closed paper tray so it keeps the paper dust-free when you’re not using the printer. The SD card slot can also be used to print photos from cameras and the printer even has a dedicated 4 x 6 photo paper tray.
The print speed is reasonably fast, for an inkjet printer, and much faster than inkjet printers from the past. The HP Envy 5660’s print quality is also pretty good, as you can see from this picture I printed. The colors are quite accurate, the image is reasonably sharp and the print is completely borderless. Very adequate for home and home office printing. The photo printing quality is also pretty good for making quick prints, as you can see in this 4x6 photo I printed.
The HP Envy 5660 uses the regular HP 62 black and HP 62 tricolor cartridges. These cartridges are surprisingly well-priced and as with every other printer, you can get aftermarket cartridges at a lower price. You can also upgrade to the HP 62 XL which will double the number of pages you can print. A little easier on the wallet, if you plan to print a lot.
